Madhya Pradesh declares nine districts COVID-19 free

  • The Madhya Pradesh government has declared that nine districts in the state, which had earlier reported COVID-19 cases, were now coronavirus-free.                
  • Additional chief secretary (Health) Mohammed Suleman said that the nine districts- Barwani, Agar-Malwa, Shajapur, Sheopur, Alirajpur, Harda, Shahdol, Tikamgarh and Betul- were now free from the infection.                                                                              
  • It was declared during a review meeting held on Friday.                                                                                   
  • Apart from this, no COVID-19 case has been detected in eight districts of the state so far, Suleman said.                                                                        
  • China reports 8 new COVID-19 cases, up from 4 a day earlier

    • Mainland China reported eight new confirmed COVID-19 cases for May 15, up from four the previous day, the National Health Commission (NHC) said in a statement on Saturday.                    
    • Six of the eight confirmed cases are so-called imported infections, while two are locally transmitted in northeastern Jilin Province.             
    • The number of new asymptomatic cases of the coronavirus rose to 13 from 11, the NHC said.       
    • The number of confirmed cases in the mainland stands at 82,941 and the death toll at 4,633.          

    Distressed migrants walk their way home with no hope of transport in Telangana

    • Thousands of distressed migrants were seen here making their way on foot towards their native places on Friday, with no hope of transport, amid the coronavirus lockdown.                
    • Speaking to ANI, Chotu Kumar Yadav said, "We have come from Tandur and we are walking towards our homes in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. It is been two months since we have received any help from the government. The government did not give us even a kilogram of wheat.".                     
    • "If somebody helps us with transport then we can reach our village," he said.                                    
    • Another migrant Neelam said, "We have come here from Tandur, we had to walk all the way on foot with our two small children. There is no hope of help for us from neither the landlord nor authorities, hence we decided to go on our own. We have to reach Raichur.".

      Mexico reports fresh one-day coronavirus record of 2,409 new cases

      • Mexico's health ministry on Friday confirmed 290 additional coronavirus deaths and 2,437 new infections in a fresh one-day record rise in cases since the start of the pandemic.           
      • The new infections brought confirmed coronavirus cases to 45,032 and 4,767 deaths in total, according to the official tally.     

      Italy to allow travel to and from abroad from June 3

      • Italy's government on Saturday approved a decree which will allow travel to and from abroad from June 3, as it moves to unwind one of Europe's most rigid coronavirus lockdowns.
